The Steam Machine was Actually Planned to be Much Cheaper

The fact that even the lowest-end model of the device, which Valve positions as a console-PC hybrid, starts at over $1,000 naturally raised the question, “Where did this price come from?” In its statement, the company explained that the Steam Machine was originally planned to be more affordable, but changes in hardware costs disrupted this goal. According to Valve, the problem isn’t just the high price, but also the unexpectedly tougher production conditions.

Steam Machine Price Increased Due to Component Costs

In explaining the pricing of the Steam Machine, Valve emphasized that the device is built with components sourced from manufacturers in different parts of the world. When the company began development in 2023, it predicted that PC hardware prices would decrease over time. In fact, this logic has often worked correctly in the past. As new technologies emerge, older parts become cheaper, production stabilizes, and costs decrease. However, the situation for the Steam Machine did not unfold as Valve expected.

According to the company, supply shortages and price increases, particularly in RAM and storage units, have significantly impacted the device’s cost. This isn’t unique to the Steam Machine; it’s become a problem driving up the prices of many products in the general hardware market. Valve says this is why they couldn’t reach their initially targeted lower price point.

The announced prices reflect the cost of parts secured over the past six months. In short, Valve admits they couldn’t price the Steam Machine as aggressively as they envisioned. This might not be very comforting for gamers, but it at least makes it a little more understandable why the company launched with such a price tag.

Costs have affected not only the price but also the number of devices available at launch.
