The Witcher 4 developer has explained the differences between the fighting styles that players will immediately notice between Ciri and Geralt, who was the protagonist for the first three games in the series.

The Witcher 4’s announcement came at The Game Awards 2024, where it was revealed in a cinematic trailer that Ciri will be taking center stage this time around. It has already been confirmed that Geralt will appear in The Witcher 4, albeit in a reduced role, giving Ciri the chance to shine.
Speaking on CD Projekt Red’s AnsweRED Podcast, senior communications manager Pawel Burza highlighted a moment in The Witcher 4’s reveal trailer where Ciri finishes off an attack with a somersault. He says, “You don’t see Geralt doing these things… He’s nimble, but he feels like a block, in some sense. She’s like, liquid, compared to him.” Players got some sense of this in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which featured multiple short sections where players could play as Ciri. However, with The Witcher 4 being designed for Ciri as the protagonist from the start, CD Projekt Red can push the boundaries of a more nimble combat style.
Game director Sebastian Kalemba followed up on the comments, claiming, “She moves like she was raised by wolves in Kaer Morhen… that comes from her personality, her posture and stuff.” Burza then joined in again, saying, “You also need to think about it – her body type is much different than what you expect in terms of Geralt. He’s more blocky, she’s very nimble, and she’s smaller, which lets her use that to her advantage, because she’s more agile.” It’s good to see this kind of thing come into consideration for The Witcher 4’s Ciri. It implies that players will get a new Witcher game that feels truly fresh after what will be over a decade of waiting.
Gamers shouldn’t expect to see any gameplay from The Witcher 4 any time soon, meaning gamers will likely be kept waiting before they can see Ciri’s new combat style in action. However, more information about the game is slowly trickling out from CD Projekt Red. It was recently revealed that there are plans for Gwent in The Witcher 4, which will bring the popular mini game from The Witcher franchise.
