This 3D Part Reduced the Ryzen 7 9800X3D Temperature by 20 Degrees
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is closely followed by hardware enthusiasts not only for its high performance but also for the temperatures it reaches under load. This time, renowned overclocking expert der8auer opted for a rather unusual method instead of trying more powerful fans or a new liquid cooler. A massive 3D-printed component attached to the AIO radiator adapted the traditional chimney concept to computer cooling.
How Was the Ryzen 7 9800X3D Cooled with a Giant Chimney?
In the experiment, the fans on the liquid cooling system’s radiator were completely removed and replaced with a 3D-printed chimney approximately 110 centimeters long. When the system was run under load, the processor temperature dropped from 90 degrees to 71 degrees. That’s a difference of exactly 19 degrees; very close to the 20-degree figure in the title.
There’s actually no new technology behind this method. Thanks to the “chimney effect,” also seen in house chimneys, hot, lower-density air rises upwards. The pressure difference created inside the chimney allows the hot air around the radiator to be expelled without the need for a fan. In short, a simple physics principle known for centuries is being used to cool a modern gaming processor.
Of course, the system didn’t yield the same results in every size. Der8auer also tried shorter models, about 10 centimeters, but these parts couldn’t create sufficient airflow. For the chimney to truly work, it needs a significant height where a negative and positive pressure difference can be created inside. Therefore, creating a compact version that can fit into small cases doesn’t seem feasible at the moment.
Although the experiment was quite successful, attaching an 110-centimeter piece to a desk case isn’t practical for everyday use. Still, seeing such a significant temperature drop without a fan is frankly quite exciting. Der8auer even suggested placing the computer in a real fireplace and using the existing chimney. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D thus became the subject of one of the strangest but most successful cooling experiments.
