Tomb Raider: Catalyst Will Rewrite the Series
Tomb Raider: Catalyst is poised to be a major turning point in the series’ 30-year history. New leaks suggest that Tomb Raider: Catalyst may feature a completely open-world structure, potentially fundamentally altering the series’ narrative and gameplay.
What Do the Tomb Raider: Catalyst Open-World Rumors Mean?
These claims first surfaced in May 2024, suggesting the game would be entirely open-world and set in North India. The inclusion of North India in the official announcement of Tomb Raider: Catalyst at The Game Awards 2025 has revived these rumors. A recently released trailer still contains details that strengthen the possibility of a single, uninterrupted map.
According to the source who shared the leak, the mountainous areas, forests, and desert-like landscapes visible simultaneously in the trailer suggest a vast, interconnected world rather than separate sections. If these claims are true, Tomb Raider: Catalyst will be the first truly open-world game in the series, moving away from the classic chapter-based progression structure.
This possibility has sparked divided reactions among players. While some find Lara Croft’s greater freedom of exploration exciting, others believe that the open-world design could disrupt the story’s pace and weaken the series’ characteristic atmosphere. This concern is based particularly on the “unnecessarily bloated open worlds” that have been criticized in recent years.
Crystal Dynamics has yet to officially confirm the open-world claims. However, the studio executives’ description of the game as “the biggest Tomb Raider project they’ve ever done” makes it difficult to completely rule out this possibility. The emphasis on grappling hooks, wall runs, and extensive environmental interactions in the trailer strongly suggests that Tomb Raider: Catalyst could usher the series into a new era, both in terms of narrative and gameplay.
