Ubisoft May Bring Back XDefiant

XDefiant generated considerable anticipation before its release, positioning itself as a “Call of Duty rival.” While offering a fun foundation with fast-paced weapon handling, action-packed matches, and various modes, a lack of content and long-term support issues shortened the game’s lifespan. The project was shelved with the servers shutting down in 2025, but some players still want Ubisoft to bring back this FPS.

The Ball is in Ubisoft’s Court for XDefiant

Mark Rubin, a former leader of XDefiant, responded to a question on social media about whether the game’s servers would be reopened. Rubin said he misses the game too, but stated that such a decision rests with Ubisoft. According to him, the company could bring back XDefiant if it wanted to, but added that Ubisoft is currently focused on staying afloat and managing numerous projects.

This statement isn’t a direct signal of a comeback, but it doesn’t completely close the door. While XDefiant’s player base wasn’t huge, it had a loyal community that loved its fast-paced and straightforward FPS gameplay. Therefore, even after the servers shut down, some players argue that the game ended prematurely and could have been better with proper support.

From Ubisoft’s perspective, the picture is a bit more complicated. The company has many major projects ahead, including Assassin’s Creed Hexe, Black Flag Resynced, a potential Assassin’s Creed 1 remake, and Beyond Good and Evil 2. Reviving a closed live-service game at such a time would be both costly and risky.

Nevertheless, comebacks aren’t entirely impossible in the gaming industry. For XDefiant to reopen, Ubisoft would need to see strong player demand, a clear content plan, and a sustainable business model. For now, this possibility seems distant, but Mark Rubin’s words at least don’t completely close the “never” door.
