Valve’s long-awaited Steam Machine project is once again making headlines in the gaming world. The device, seen as Valve’s new “console experiment” following the Steam Deck, is the center of controversy, particularly regarding its pricing. Many analysts argue that the device’s future success hinges entirely on its price point.
The Sweet Spot for the Steam Machine: $400
In an interview with Eurogamer, market analyst Rhyss Elliott stated that the Steam Machine’s “road to success” will begin with the right price. According to Elliott, Valve could make the console accessible to a wider audience by offering the base model with 512GB of storage for $400 and the top-tier model with 2TB for $450. This price range would position the device below current-generation consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, providing a competitive advantage.
Elliott says, “Starting with $400 and a controller would be Valve’s best move. This price could appeal to both PC gamers and console enthusiasts.” However, he also emphasizes that raising the price above $500 would push the device into the “niche mini PC” category. According to the analyst, this perception could undermine the console’s intended “living room-focused gaming experience.”
The Steam Deck’s sales performance is also a key point of reference in this discussion. While the device was highly popular, its sales figures fell short of the Nintendo Switch’s. According to Elliott, this taught Valve a valuable lesson: “20% of users dock their Steam Deck to their TV. This demonstrates the significant potential for a device that brings the comfort of a desktop to the living room.”
The Steam Machine could be not only a piece of hardware for Valve, but also an opportunity to re-enter the console market. However, achieving this goal appears to depend more on pricing stability than on the device’s performance. If Valve implements the right strategy, 2026 could be the year Steam returns to the living room.
