Where Will Elder Scrolls 6 Take Place?
Although Bethesda first teased Elder Scrolls 6 almost a decade ago, the game’s setting remains a mystery. While the mountains and forests shown in the short teaser fueled theories, a statement from a former Bethesda developer may have shed some light on the mystery.
Which Region is the “Most Logical” for Elder Scrolls 6?
In an interview, Kurt Kuhlmann, a former lore head at Bethesda, stated that the location of Elder Scrolls 6 was considered “very clear” within the studio at one point. According to Kuhlmann, the location of a game set after Skyrim was seen as a natural choice among the developers, without any debate. He emphasized that this decision was made entirely based on atmosphere and world-building, even before the story was written.
This statement has revived the Hammerfell theory, which fans have been speculating about for years. Hammerfell, a Redguard territory, is known as one of the rare areas where resistance against the Aldmeri Dominion was successful. The Alik’r warriors and dialogues encountered in Skyrim also point to this ongoing resistance. This provides a very meaningful context when considering the post-Great War balance of power in Tamriel.
The civil war, Thalmor oppression, and conflicts surrounding the Talos faith, which form the core theme of Skyrim, point to an unfinished story in the Elder Scrolls universe. Hammerfell offers a strong backdrop for continuing this great political and ideological struggle, while also possessing the potential to refresh the series with new cultures and geographies.
Of course, options like High Rock or the Summerset Islands are not entirely out of the question. However, Kuhlmann’s emphasis on an “obvious choice” elevates the long-standing Hammerfell idea to a higher level than other theories. While uncertainty will persist until Bethesda makes an official announcement, it now seems much more logical for The Elder Scrolls 6 to be set in this turbulent region of Tamriel.
