Stranger Than Heaven will Span Five Different Historical Periods

Stranger Than Heaven has reappeared at Tokyo Game Show 2026 with new gameplay footage. The game, which stretches into the distant past of the Like a Dragon universe, won’t be limited to a single city or era. Players will follow Makoto Daito’s rise over the years, witnessing different periods and changing cities of Japan.

Stranger Than Heaven Will Offer Five Cities and Five Eras

The game’s story will unfold across five different cities and five distinct historical periods. The journey will begin in 1915 in Kokura, Fukuoka, then move to Kure in 1929, Minami, Osaka in 1943, Atami in 1951, and finally Shinjuku in 1965. This will allow players to directly see how not only the characters but also the environment and eras have changed.

Makoto Daito arrives in Japan from San Francisco as a fugitive, hoping to start a new life. Yu Shirota voices the character, while the story also features notable actors such as Yu Shinjo (Dean Fujioka) and Orpheus (Snoop Dogg). Orpheus’s introduction of Daito to the criminal underworld is a crucial turning point in his journey to becoming the founder of the Tojo Clan.

The combat system is also designed differently from classic Like a Dragon games. Instead of faster, button-based combat, a heavier, more controlled structure will be used, where Daito’s right and left sides are controlled separately. Players will be able to develop different melee weapons while trying to time attacks, blocks, and counter-moves. This could make the game’s combat more tactical than previous installments.

The music system will also be one of Stranger Than Heaven’s most interesting features. Daito will be able to record environmental sounds, transform these sounds into new pieces with composers, and organize concerts in different eras. In addition, there will be side activities such as arm wrestling, dice games, card games, and shooting galleries. Stranger Than Heaven will be released on January 15, 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and will be added to Xbox Game Pass from day one.
