According to the Former Leader, The Witcher 3 is Not Untouchable
Despite the years that have passed, The Witcher 3 is still considered one of the strongest examples of the RPG genre. Both the main story and expansion packs like Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine were highly praised. However, according to Marcin Blacha, a key figure in the project, all this praise doesn’t mean the game is flawless.
The Witcher 3 Still Has Room for Improvement
Marcin Blacha, one of the lead writers of The Witcher 3, openly states that he doesn’t see the game as a “monument” or an untouchable masterpiece. According to Blacha, the game still has aspects that can be improved. He mentions that when he plays the game again today, he looks at certain sections and thinks, “If I were to do this now, I would do it differently.”
Actually, this approach isn’t very surprising for a game that’s over a decade old. Technology, design principles, and player expectations have changed significantly. CD Projekt Red has previously stated that some mechanics usable today weren’t technically possible during the game’s initial development.
At this point, the criticism of The Witcher 3 reflects less on belittling the game’s success and more on the developer’s perspective. Blacha’s words reveal that there wasn’t a complacency within the team, a “we already did it perfectly” attitude. The fact that they’re still looking back at their old work years later to see what could have been done better isn’t necessarily a bad sign for the future of the series.
Moreover, new content for The Witcher 3 and a sequel are in the works. With the Songs of the Past expansion and The Witcher 4 under development, learning from the shortcomings of the old game naturally raises expectations. The Witcher 3 may not be untouchable, but the bar is still set very high.
