Sega’s New Netflix Adaptations Include Crazy Taxi and Sonic

Sega is bringing three different brands from its game catalog to the TV and film side as part of a new multi-project deal with Netflix. The first project under the agreement will be a Crazy Taxi movie, but plans don’t stop there. A new Sonic the Hedgehog animated series and a Stranger Than Heaven movie are also in development. So Sega is really pushing hard on game adaptations, and it seems this is just the beginning.

Sega Prepares Three New Game Adaptations for Netflix

The announced projects are as follows:

• Crazy Taxi: A feature film based on the long-running racing series is in development. The screenplay will be written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, who worked on the 2025 remake of The Naked Gun.
• Sonic the Hedgehog: A new animated series targeting younger audiences is being developed. The series will feature Sonic and his friends as heroes.
• Stranger Than Heaven: A film based on RGG Studio’s new action-adventure game is in development. The story, set in early 20th-century Japan, will be adapted for the big screen.

On the Crazy Taxi side, the source material is already far too crazy for an adaptation. The series, which began in arcade machines in 1999, saw players flying through traffic in yellow taxis trying to get customers to their destinations. The producers aim to preserve that punk-rock energy and chaotic structure of the film. The new game in the series, Crazy Taxi: World Tour, will be released in 2027.

The new Sonic series will be a separate project from Sonic Prime, which aired for three seasons on Netflix. Sega describes its new production as an animation aimed at younger children, but still with an energetic and slightly rebellious tone. Stranger Than Heaven, on the other hand, is much more serious; the game will tell the story of a foreign character’s rise from poverty to the yakuza world and then to the entertainment industry.

Netflix’s game adaptations are already growing with projects like Assassin’s Creed, Gears of War, Minecraft, and Devil May Cry. Sega’s addition to this list with three different brands is not surprising. Crazy Taxi, Sonic, and Stranger Than Heaven are completely different projects, but that’s precisely why the outcome of the deal is so intriguing.
