Assassin’s Creed Designer Leaves Ubisoft After 20 Years
Luc Couture, who has worked for Ubisoft for over twenty years and is particularly known for the Assassin’s Creed series, announced his departure from the company via a statement on social media. This decision, following a long career at Ubisoft Montreal, has brought back into focus both the changes within the studio and the recent turmoil.
A New Era for the Assassin’s Creed Designer
In his statement, Luc Couture said he had completed his last day at Ubisoft Montreal and that this departure stemmed entirely from personal needs. Couture emphasized that during his career spanning over twenty years, he learned a great deal in terms of game development, teamwork, and professional growth, and that he now wanted to turn a new page.
Couture, who joined Ubisoft in 2002, began his career as a level designer on Prince of Persia projects. Over time, he rose to senior level designer and level design director positions on the Assassin’s Creed series. He also played significant roles in major projects such as Watch Dogs 2, Watch Dogs: Legion, and Far Cry 4.
Couture’s departure comes at a time when Ubisoft is going through a very difficult period. In recent months, the company has been in the news due to restructuring, potential layoffs, employee strikes, and calls for CEO Yves Guillemot’s resignation. This departure is seen not only as an individual decision but also as a reflection of the overall atmosphere within the studio.
On the other hand, this is not the first experienced name to leave Ubisoft. The departure of Marc-Alexis Côté, a former executive on the Assassin’s Creed series, and the subsequent legal proceedings, have fueled discussions about “senior developer exodus” in the industry. While it has been stated that Luc Couture’s new address will be a smaller studio comprised of more experienced professionals, it remains to be seen whether these departures from Ubisoft will continue.
