Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, one of the notable titles in the gaming world, has made headlines for a different reason. The game’s developer, Sandfall Interactive, sent a legal warning regarding a comic book project with a similar name. This development once again highlighted the sensitivity of copyright issues in the gaming and publishing world.

Clair-Obscur Name Dispute Halts Comic Book Project

Comic book author Olivier Gay announced on social media that he had received a letter from a lawyer regarding the project. Gay’s work was titled “L’Académie Clair-Obscur” and featured a fantasy story set in a magic academy. However, Sandfall Interactive objected to the commercial publication of the project, arguing that the similarity in name could create confusion with their brand. Gay then announced that he agreed to change the project’s name rather than engage in a lengthy legal battle.

According to the author, this project actually originated from a rather old idea. Gay states that he first presented the comic book concept to a publishing house in 2019, and the official contract for the project was signed in March 2024. This means the project was planned before Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 became widely known. However, this situation, arising from a similarity in names, shows that creative projects can sometimes lead to unexpected copyright disputes.

Interestingly, Olivier Gay is actually a big fan of the game. In his statement, the author said he played Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and even achieved a platinum trophy in the game. Therefore, he openly expressed his disappointment at having to go through such a legal process with the developers of a game he loves.

For now, the project is not completely canceled. However, the name “Clair-Obscur” will no longer be used, and the work will be published under a different title. This incident continues to be discussed as a recent example of how carefully projects inspired by or bearing similar names from video games need to be planned in terms of copyright and trademark rights.
