Could Avengers: Secret Wars Bring Thanos Back?
Josh Brolin first portrayed Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy, then transformed the character into one of the MCU’s greatest villains in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. While Thanos’s story seemed to end in Endgame, the multiverse structure makes it possible for the character to return in different variants. Recent rumors suggest that this possibility is being considered, particularly for Avengers: Secret Wars.
Avengers: Secret Wars Could Reopen the Door for Thanos
When asked if he thought Thanos was truly dead, Josh Brolin gave a rather evasive answer. Brolin simply stated that he didn’t know how to answer the question. This statement alone doesn’t confirm a return, but the actor’s failure to definitively say “no” has fueled the rumors.
Thanos’s return in Avengers: Secret Wars seems possible from a story perspective. Different variants of the character have already been shown in productions like What If…? Furthermore, the Secret Wars comics feature a rather memorable confrontation between Doctor Doom and Thanos. While the film doesn’t have to follow the comics exactly, bringing the two characters face-to-face could create a powerful scene for Marvel.
Bronin has previously stated that he is open to returning to the role of Thanos if Marvel Studios calls him back. The actor said he enjoyed his time with the character and, even if he felt the story was complete, he wouldn’t shy away from reprising his role if a suitable idea came along. His latest statement, combined with these previous words, doesn’t completely rule out the possibility.
For now, Marvel Studios hasn’t made an official statement regarding Thanos’s return. Given Avengers: Secret Wars’ multiverse-centric nature, a brief cameo, a different variant of Thanos, or a direct confrontation with Doctor Doom are all possibilities. Avengers: Secret Wars is set to be released on December 17, 2027, and whether Thanos will actually return is likely one of the film’s most closely guarded surprises.
