Xbox has Launched an Initiative to Move Disc-Based Games to a Digital Library

Microsoft is preparing to test the long-rumored disc-to-digital system through its Xbox Insider program. The new system will allow users who own supported physical games to gain digital access to the same game. Initially, thousands of games will be supported, with plans to increase the number of compatible titles over time.

XBOX Will Match Physical Games with Digital Rights

According to Asha Sharma, the system will be available to Xbox Insider users next week. The basic principle is simple: if your ownership of a supported physical game is verified, the same game will become available in your digital library. This aims to prevent disc collections accumulated over the years from being tied solely to physical hardware.

Sharma specifically emphasizes that physical game libraries are not just discs, but carry years of memories and stories for players. Initially, thousands of compatible games will be included in the system, but it’s clear that not every disc from previous Xbox generations will be automatically supported.

This solution has actually been discussed for some time. Rumors suggested Microsoft was working on a system to convert old discs into digital licenses, and it was claimed the company might announce this in August. With the new announcement, this idea is no longer just a rumor, but some details are still unclear, such as exactly how the system will verify and whether the physical disc will continue to be used afterwards.

The timing is also no coincidence. Physical game ownership and digital licenses have been seriously debated throughout 2026. The issue has grown, especially after PlayStation announced that physical disc production will end from 2028 onwards. Xbox’s disc-to-digital move, however, offers a different approach, aiming to move physical collections into the digital world rather than completely abandoning them.
