Double Fine will Make Brutal Legend 2 if They Raise $100 Million

Double Fine, after separating from Xbox and becoming independent again, launched a new game jam campaign on Kickstarter. The studio had previously used crowdfunding for Broken Age. This time, what’s noteworthy is the campaign’s seemingly humorous but equally striking additional goal: If total support reaches $100 million, Brutal Legend 2 will be developed.

$100 Million Goal Set for Brutal Legend 2

As of September 1st, the campaign has raised approximately $284,000 of its main goal of $400,000. This means it has reached about 71% of the target. However, the $100 million level set for Brutal Legend 2 is hundreds of times higher than the main goal and has therefore become the most talked-about detail of the campaign.

It’s unclear whether the goal is serious or purely humorous. However, considering the costs of big-budget games today, a $100 million budget isn’t theoretically entirely unreasonable. Nevertheless, it seems highly unlikely that Double Fine will reach that level with their current campaign scale.

The first Brutal Legend, released in 2009, centered on the character Eddie Riggs, voiced by Jack Black. The game saw a roadie transported to a fantastical world inspired by heavy metal album covers. By 2011, it had sold approximately 1.4 million copies.

Double Fine also states that the current campaign is not only for smaller projects but also to keep the studio afloat and buy time while seeking funding for larger games. Therefore, while the Brutal Legend 2 goal seems difficult to achieve for now, it sends a noteworthy message that the series is still on the studio’s agenda.
