GTA 6 is Set to Change a 25-Year-Old Habit in Controller Layout

Rockstar Games is overhauling not only the open world and gameplay systems but also the core control scheme with GTA 6. According to information from content creators who tested the game before its release, the “pressing the button repeatedly to run” system, used in the series for nearly 25 years, is being removed by default. This means players will no longer have to constantly press the X button to make their characters run in GTA 6.

GTA 6 Changes the Default Running System

Until now, sprinting in Grand Theft Auto games required repeatedly pressing the X button on PlayStation and the A button on Xbox. This system became one of the series’ most well-known control habits over time. Especially when escaping from the police or running long distances, players constantly pressing the same button had become almost synonymous with GTA.

In GTA 6, it’s reported that the default sprint pattern has been changed to pressing L3. This information was shared by content creator MikeShowSha, who attended a closed-door preview of the game. This means GTA 6 will be closer to the more standard control style used in many modern games like Call of Duty and Battlefield.

This change isn’t entirely new. GTA 5 allowed players to use different sprint patterns via control options, and some players already preferred L3-like alternatives. The difference in GTA 6 is that this system has become the default control scheme. It’s not yet clear whether Rockstar will offer players the option to choose the old system.

This seemingly small change could also be significant in terms of accessibility. Removing the need to constantly press buttons could make controls more comfortable during longer play sessions. While recent previews show significant changes to the movement and animation systems compared to GTA 5, this control update seems to be part of Rockstar’s effort to modernize the core gameplay feel.
