Modern Warfare 4 Developers Lose to Players on Their Own Track
Infinity Ward created a special obstacle course during the development process of Modern Warfare 4’s revamped movement mechanics. Initially used solely to test the movement system, this area quickly became a source of intense competition within the studio. Developers began meticulously reviewing their recordings frame by frame to improve their times, but once the course fell into the hands of players, the studio’s best times didn’t last long.
Modern Warfare 4 Players Made a Difference with Small Details
Multiplayer technical designer Jack Hoppus says the developers became quite competitive with the obstacle course. Some team members recorded their runs and meticulously analyzed the footage frame by frame, searching for ways to win even the smallest fractions of a second. This competition led to the course being incorporated into the final game, rather than just being a development tool.
When players reached the parkour course, they surpassed the developers’ times quite quickly. Interestingly, they didn’t achieve this by discovering entirely different approaches, but by combining movements more efficiently. For example, if jumping is already required while descending stairs, it becomes possible to gain several valuable moments by simultaneously reloading a weapon.
For Infinity Ward, these kinds of micro-optimizations have been a significant source of feedback. Players pushing the movement system in ways the developers didn’t anticipate shows the team just how flexible the mechanics are. Hoppus also notes that the new use cases players are creating excitement within the studio.
In Modern Warfare 4, the goal is to offer players who value movement skills a deep system to master, while also not leaving out those who prefer a more tactical approach. Infinity Ward wants to make the movement feel powerful but without turning the game into an overly arcade-like experience. The fact that players are beating the developers’ parkour scores is an early indication that the system offers more room for mastery than they anticipated.
