DUST: Origins Showed Its First Gameplay at Gamescom 2026
Developed by Airship Syndicate, DUST: Origins was re-shown with an extensive presentation during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026. Previously announced with a short teaser, this time the game was revealed with actual gameplay footage, character classes, and the core structure of the story. The new project from the team behind titles like Darksiders Genesis and Ruined King offers an isometric action-horror experience set in a collapsing orbital prison called Limbo-6.
DUST: Origins Turns Prison Escape into a Survival Struggle
Players will control a prisoner unexpectedly freed from a cryopreservation prison. As Limbo-6’s orbit deteriorates, the station’s systems begin to collapse one by one. The problem won’t be just other prisoners or security forces; escaped creatures will also roam the corridors of the station, which was used for biological experiments. There will be multiple ways to escape, but the decisions made will directly alter the course of the story.
While combat appears fast-paced, resource management will be crucial. Ammunition will be limited, environmental hazards can be exploited in battles, and players will need to carefully choose their positions in each encounter. The trailer shows fast-moving characters alongside much larger classes carrying heavy weapons. Weapons, inventory, and character development systems will play a significant role in the game’s progression.
DUST: Origins won’t just be a linear escape story. Helping other survivors encountered at the station can unlock new missions, items, or alternative paths. Leaving some characters to their fate, however, will lead to different outcomes. The game will feature multiple endings, post-credits epilogues, and even special “dead-ending” outcomes that can prematurely conclude the story.
Airship Syndicate is developing the game self-funded and states that the Kickstarter campaign is not to determine whether the project will be released, but rather to increase its scope and polish. DUST: Origins is planned for release on PC in 2027 and is already available to add to wishlists on Steam. The game’s atmosphere, reminiscent of hard science fiction films from the 80s and 90s, seems to be one of its most distinctive features.
