Game of Thrones: War for Westeros Shows Its First Gameplay
PlaySide Studios released the first gameplay trailer for Game of Thrones: War for Westeros during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026. Announced last year with only a cinematic video, the game blends the classic real-time strategy genre with the Game of Thrones universe. The new footage showcases battles with large armies, hero units, and the gameplay styles of different houses in greater detail than ever before.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros Brings Houses to War
Players will be able to command House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, or the Night King’s Army of the Dead. Each side will have its own unique units, heroes, and approach to warfare. Familiar names like Jon Snow, Jaime Lannister, and Daenerys Targaryen will also play direct roles on the battlefield.
In battles, not only troop numbers but also map control and positioning will be crucial. The development team previously showcased the Ashemark 1v1 battlefield, highlighting tactical options such as open corridors, defensible points, and flanking attacks. Players will constantly need to decide where to advance, which areas to hold, and how to utilize the terrain.
In keeping with the Game of Thrones universe, armies won’t be limited to classic infantry. Much more powerful units like dragons and giants will be able to shift the balance of battles. Alongside single-player content, there will also be multiplayer battles, where players can compete against each other for the Iron Throne.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros was originally planned for release in 2026, but the date was pushed back to early 2027 during development. The game is being developed for PC and will be released on Steam. A beta test is also planned for before the end of 2026. The first gameplay demonstration at Gamescom shows that PlaySide is trying to transform Westeros not just into a licensed strategy game, but into a comprehensive RTS experience.
