Where Has Ultron Been All These Years? James Spader Finally Reveals

After his final confrontation with Vision in 2015, Ultron’s fate remained uncertain for a long time. It was thought Vision had completely destroyed him, but the scene being deliberately left open fueled theories for years that the villain might have somehow survived. The VisionQuest trailer revealed that Ultron resides in Vision’s mind. Now, James Spader has explained in more detail how this happened and how the character has spent the intervening years.

Ultron Has Been Holding Prison in Vision’s Mind for Years

According to James Spader, Ultron has been held in a prison within Vision’s mind since their last encounter in Avengers: Age of Ultron. This means the character didn’t infiltrate Vision’s system or get captured from somewhere else years later. It seems Vision found a way to imprison Ultron in his own mind instead of completely destroying his consciousness in that final encounter in 2015.

Interestingly, Ultron didn’t live completely isolated from the world during this period. According to Spader, the character has access to the internet, television, and historical content. It’s stated that he consumed these resources over the years, painted pictures, and continued to cause trouble in his own way. Spader also says he still sees Ultron’s relationship with Vision as a complex love-hate dynamic.

In VisionQuest, other AIs will also play significant roles besides Ultron. Vision’s mind is occupied by systems familiar from the Tony Stark era, such as J.A.R.V.I.S., F.R.I.D.A.Y., and E.D.I.T.H. According to Paul Bettany, Vision evaluates his daily experiences with these AIs at night, using their different personalities to try and understand his own identity.

The central theme of the series is Vision’s identity crisis. The reconstructed character, with his past memories restored, will have to resist Ultron’s influence while trying to figure out who he is. Things will become even more complicated when he starts escaping with a mysterious child named Thomas Shepard. VisionQuest seems to be using Ultron’s return not just as the re-emergence of an old villain, but as one of the most important parts of Vision’s confrontation with his past.
