Epic Games is Ushering in a New Era with Unreal Engine 6
Epic Games is preparing to usher in a new era of game technology with Unreal Engine 6. One of the first notable examples of this major transition will be Rocket League, which has been running on Unreal Engine 3 for years. The announcement, made at the Rocket League Championship Series event in Paris, generated considerable excitement, especially among long-time fans of the game. However, some details in the promotional video raised some questions about a possible Fortnite connection.
Unreal Engine 6 Launches a New Era for Rocket League
Since its launch in 2015, Rocket League has been running on the Unreal Engine 3 platform. After 11 years, the fact that the game’s new era will be shaped by Unreal Engine 6 seems like a truly significant turning point for the community. The announcement was made before the Team Vitality vs. Karmine Corp match during the Paris Major, and the reaction in the arena clearly showed how long players had been waiting for this change.
A short trailer featuring in-game footage was also shared during the announcement. These images offered the first glimpses of the visual and technical leap Rocket League could experience with the new engine. However, an official release date has not yet been announced. Therefore, it remains unclear when players will be able to experience Rocket League with Unreal Engine 6.
While the announcement sparked a wave of excitement on social media, some players also expressed concerns. The inclusion of visuals and interface details reminiscent of Fortnite collaborations in the trailer led to speculation that Rocket League might lose its own identity and become part of the Fortnite ecosystem. Veteran players, especially those who appreciate the game’s independent spirit, are particularly cautious about this.
Despite this, the overall atmosphere seems quite positive. For many players, the main issue is that Rocket League will finally be free from Unreal Engine 3. While some want the trading system to return and others are wary of the Fortnite connection, the Unreal Engine 6 move represents a significant technical overhaul for Rocket League’s future. For now, what’s expected is for Epic Games and Psyonix to show more clearly how they will manage this transition.
