Fans Completed the Missing Mechanic in Black Flag Resynced
While Black Flag Resynced garnered attention with its visual innovations and revamped systems, the removal of some classic mechanics drew criticism from players. Changes to melee combat, in particular, didn’t please many fans of the original game. The fact that the Hidden Blade wasn’t directly selectable as a weapon and the removal of the bare-knuckle combat system were among the most talked-about issues. Now, instead of waiting, one fan has found a solution themselves.
Fistfighting Returns to Black Flag Resynced
The Unarmed Combat mod, created by Nexus Mods user kamzik123, allows Edward Kenway to fight enemies unarmed once again. Thus, fistfighting, a feature of the original Black Flag, has been brought back to the Resynced version by the community approximately a month after its release.
To use the mod, players need to equip the Officer Small Swords weapon. When this is chosen, Edward raises his fists instead of using his sword and can attack enemies with his bare hands. The current structure seems to leverage the pub fighting system already present in the game, but the mod developer hasn’t shared a detailed technical explanation.
Everything doesn’t work perfectly. Sword animations are still used, especially in finishing moves. So even if Edward is fighting opponents with his fists, you might see animations in some final blows as if he’s wielding a weapon he doesn’t actually have. Therefore, the mod doesn’t completely bring back the unarmed combat system from the original game.
Nevertheless, it’s noteworthy that the community has brought back such a feature so quickly. Ubisoft has previously stated that they are monitoring player feedback regarding missing mechanics, but an official update hasn’t been released yet. As the modding community for Black Flag Resynced continues to grow, it wouldn’t be surprising if fans bring back other features that were cut or changed over time.
