Final Fantasy 7 Remake Didn’t Receive the Expected Attention

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 re-release, announced last month, is now available on Steam. Replacing the 2013 version, this new release comes with some modern features. However, it seems these innovations, instead of evoking nostalgia, have already sparked controversy.

What Went Wrong with the Final Fantasy 7 Steam Version?

The new version added Battle Enhancement features such as 3x speed mode, an option to disable random battles, HP/MP regeneration during combat, and filling the Limit indicator, as well as an automatic save system. While these innovations looked quite attractive on paper, they brought with them some technical problems in practice.

Players are complaining particularly strongly about the 3x speed mode. While increasing the FPS limit from 15 to 30 speeds up combat and action, animations don’t keep up, leading to a loss of synchronization between sound and visuals. Comments like “Combat speed is completely broken” and “animations don’t match the sound” are frequently seen on the Steam page. In addition, technical glitches such as overlay errors, texture problems, and screen tearing have also been reported.

Square Enix reportedly released a patch the same day to address the combat speed issue. However, it’s unclear whether this will be enough to improve user ratings. Currently, Final Fantasy 7’s average rating on Steam has dropped to “Mostly Negative.”

The re-release of a legendary classic always generates high expectations. However, this new version of Final Fantasy 7 doesn’t seem to have made the desired initial impression. Upcoming updates may change player opinion.
