Gears of War: E-Day Will Remain True to the Core Formula of the Series
The Coalition, in statements made at Gamescom 2026, explained that they remained particularly true to the series’ past while shaping the creative direction of Gears of War: E-Day. According to creative director Matt Searcy, the team wants to bring back to the center the tight combat structure, heavy weapon feel, and intense action that made Gears stand out years ago. The goal is not to simply copy the old games, but to reinterpret these core features with modern technology.
Gears of War: E-Day Focuses on Its Own Identity Without Looking to Other Series
Searcy believes that the Gears series has been one of the strongest examples in the industry for years, especially in cover-based combat. Therefore, E-Day will use the cover system, heavy weapon feel, and dismemberment-focused combat as its main pillars. By building a modern game engine around this familiar formula, The Coalition is trying to recapture the old feeling that the series left players with.
Despite this, the development team doesn’t want the new game to rely solely on nostalgia. While aiming for E-Day to feel current and different, they’ve returned to Gears’ own past rather than following the systems of other popular action games. The studio’s approach is based on avoiding the idea of ”becoming like other series to be modern” as much as possible.
This thinking isn’t only reflected in the gameplay. The Coalition has previously stated its distance from the aggressive monetization systems prevalent in modern shooter games and its desire to return to the classic content-based systems unlocked by playing E-Day. Thus, the more direct structure of the series’ earlier days will be preserved in terms of progression and rewards.
The Gears of War series was also known for pushing the boundaries of visual technology and hardware in the past. Brand director Nicole Fawcette says that The Coalition team is working hard to continue this tradition, and it’s reflected on screen. Gears of War: E-Day will be released on October 6th for PC and Xbox Series X|S, and it looks like the return of the series will rely more on the features that made Gears, Gears again, than on following trends.
