GTA 6 Brings Rockstar’s Biggest Open World in History
According to information shared from a preview at Rockstar North, GTA 6’s map will significantly surpass the studio’s previous major open-world games. According to figures provided by Rob Nelson of the game’s development team, the total map size will be approximately twice that of GTA 5 and about three times that of Red Dead Redemption 2. Vice City itself will also be roughly twice the size of Los Santos.
GTA 6 Open World Raises the Bar in Scale
The size of the map isn’t just about the overall surface area. According to the information shared, when Vice City and its surrounding suburbs are considered together, the area is approximately 11 times larger than Los Santos and its surroundings. This figure shows that GTA 6 will dedicate significant space not only to the city center but also to different areas surrounding Leonida.
We already had the opportunity to see a small part of this scale during the Extended Look. We compiled the details that were easy to miss in the presentation in our article “GTA 6 Extended Look: 10 Important Details You Missed.” Those who want to see the missions, character moments, and the overall structure of Vice City from the entire presentation can check out our article “GTA 6 Extended Look: What Did We See?”.
In the new footage, the scene where Lucia looks at the city from a tall building and then parachutes shows quite well how vast Vice City is. In addition, the use of vehicles such as jet skis, canoes, and airboats reveals that the open world will not be limited to just roads. It seems that air vehicles will also be freely used in a large part of the map.
Rockstar’s real strength in open-world designs is not just size, but also density and interaction level. GTA 6’s massive map is expected to be filled with interiors, side activities, character encounters, and small environmental details. Therefore, how full these areas feel will be as important as the size of the new map itself.
If Rockstar can combine this scale with the level of detail seen in Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA 6 could be not only the most ambitious open-world game in the series, but also the studio’s most ambitious project to date. Even the numbers released so far are enough to show just how massive the game will be.
