GTA 6 will Break a New Record in the Series with its Story Length
One of the new pieces of information that emerged after the GTA 6 Extended Look was the length of the game’s main story. Rockstar’s co-studio head, Rob Nelson, revealed that in his own playthrough, completing GTA 6 took approximately 80 hours. Moreover, a large portion of this time was dedicated to the main story and some optional objectives that impacted the narrative.
GTA 6 Story Length Will Approach 80 Hours
According to Nelson’s statement, the approximately 80 hours of gameplay doesn’t largely encompass the time spent freely in the open world. This means that if players dedicate more time to side activities, exploration, and various other activities in Vice City and Leonida, the total gameplay time could easily exceed 100 hours. Especially considering GTA 6’s massive open world, players who don’t rush to complete the main story can expect a very long adventure.
Another important detail here is the optional objectives that affect the narrative. Rockstar’s recent statements indicate that some decisions can make a difference in the progression of the story. The fact that the relationship between Jason and Lucia can change depending on the player’s actions is one example. Therefore, the GTA 6 story length will not only be long but will also offer a different experience from player to player.
A comparison with previous games in the series shows the difference more clearly. According to HowLongToBeat data, the main story of GTA 5 takes approximately 32 hours. GTA 4 is completed in about 27 hours, while completing the main stories of GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas back-to-back takes a total of about 64 hours. GTA 6 alone seems to be longer than the combined total of these three games.
Even more interestingly, while completing GTA 5 100% takes approximately 90 hours, the main story of GTA 6 alone will come very close to that. Rockstar hasn’t yet provided comprehensive information about the online side, but the sheer amount of single-player content suggests the studio doesn’t need to rush things.
The current figure of 80 hours is based on Nelson’s own gameplay, and naturally, each player’s time will vary. Nevertheless, current information suggests GTA 6’s story will be by far the longest in the series, keeping players engaged in Vice City for an extended period.
