Horizon Hunters Gathering is Making fans Uneasy, but Why?
Even PlayStation’s announcement of Horizon Hunters Gathering with a rather unremarkable title was surprising in itself. However, the real controversy began with the game’s visual language and energetic structure, which sharply deviated from the familiar Horizon atmosphere. While the series has been associated with a more melancholic and realistic tone for years, the arrival of this new spin-off with a completely different identity naturally unsettled fans.
Is Horizon Hunters Gathering Experiencing a Tone and Identity Crisis?
The most criticized aspect of Horizon Hunters Gathering is its art style. The vibrant color palette, more stylized character designs, and anime-inspired movement language create a stark contrast with the heavier, nature-centered, and dramatic world of Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West. While some players interpret this change as a “Fortnite effect,” others believe it’s shifting towards a Dauntless-like aesthetic. This perception has created significant prejudice even before the game’s release.
On the other hand, Horizon Hunters Gathering is a spin-off. This means it doesn’t have to carry the exact tone of the main series. Rather, spin-offs are often there to experiment with ideas the main franchise wouldn’t dare explore. A faster-paced, exaggerated, and cooperative-focused structure choosing a corresponding visual identity isn’t illogical from a design perspective. The problem is how abrupt and drastic this change is.
The real breaking point is the name. Over the years, the Horizon brand has established a specific tone, narrative language, and worldview. Themes like isolation, loss, human history, and the remnants of technology formed the core of the series. Horizon Hunters Gathering, however, seems to aim for a more energetic, brighter, and more “gamelike” experience. This creates a sense of conflict with the universe for some players.
Perhaps the biggest question is: if this game didn’t carry the Horizon label, would the reactions have been milder? Probably yes. Presented as a new IP, a stylized robot-hunting co-op action game might have been met with less expectation. Now, Horizon Hunters Gathering is both overshadowed by and compared to the main series. Therefore, the apprehension stems not only from the art style but also from the uncertainty about how the brand identity will evolve.
