Kingdom Hearts 4 will Offer Fewer But Far Richer Worlds
With the unveiling of the Coco world at D23, the new era for Kingdom Hearts 4 has begun to take shape. So far, Quadratum and Coco have been confirmed, but players shouldn’t expect a series of new world announcements. Tetsuya Nomura stated that instead of simply adding more worlds this time, the team is focusing on making each one much more detailed, directly impacting the total number of worlds.
Kingdom Hearts 4 Will Fit More Content into Fewer Worlds
According to Nomura, Kingdom Hearts 4 will feature the most detailed worlds the series has ever seen. This comes at a price in terms of numbers. We were used to seeing around 13 to 15 worlds in previous games, but it’s clear that this number will be lower in the new game. However, the exact number hasn’t been shared yet.
Coco also explains this approach quite well. It’s said that the shown section is only a small part of the world, and even then, the first glimpses look quite intense. Nomura states that Coco is only the beginning of a larger area, implying that players will spend more time in these worlds than in previous games.
Another noteworthy aspect is that the story isn’t shrinking. On the contrary, it’s been revealed that Kingdom Hearts 4’s story is approximately twice as long as Kingdom Hearts 3’s. So, fewer worlds won’t mean shorter adventures. It seems Square Enix is opting to reduce the number of worlds this time, increasing story density and exploration time.
The timing of new previews is somewhat uncertain. Nomura says they want to carefully time the announcements and that there might be some time between the next major reveal. While the Tokyo Game Show is being discussed as a possibility, there are no confirmed plans at the moment. Kingdom Hearts 4 seems to be reversing the series’ classic formula this time, with fewer but much richer worlds.
