Cutout Will Offer a Dark Adventure in a World Made of Paper
Big Blue Sky Games and 906 Games have announced Cutout, a new papercraft action-horror game. Players will control Lena, an outcast child in a dying forest. Never accepted by the people in her village, Lena embarks on a perilous journey to obtain a mysterious staff said to grant her the power to rule both the land and its inhabitants.
Cutout Allows You to Attach Parts of Enemies to Your Character
The game’s most notable system is the combat mechanic called “Cut & Paste Combat.” Lena can directly attach limbs she cuts off from enemies to her own body. For example, severing an enemy’s arm can grant a new attack or ability. Thus, each encounter becomes an opportunity to change the character’s structure.
The development team is using this system not only for power boosts but also to allow the player to create their own play style. You can create a Lena who focuses on specific attack types, or you can constantly experiment with different enemy parts to create even stranger combinations. As art director Giulio Perez says, the reward here isn’t a new sword, but the arm that wields it.
The visuals also seem to be one of the game’s strongest points. Cutout’s world feels like a dark diorama made from real materials. A gloomy but quite unique atmosphere is created using cardboard, paper, and pieces resembling everyday objects found in attics.
The music follows the same approach. Composer Sergio Missaglia says he used instruments he had never played before, even broken instruments he found in second-hand shops, to achieve a rawer and more unusual sound. The development team also specifically emphasizes that generative AI is not used in the game’s art, animation, music, and writing.
Cutout will be released on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. A definitive release date has not yet been announced. However, the combination of a seemingly charming, paper-based world with such a harsh and dark system was enough to set the game apart from others from its very first announcement.
