Modern Warfare 4 Switch 2 Port Proved a Great Challenge for the Developers

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be the first game in the main series to return to the Nintendo platform since Call of Duty: Ghosts in 2013. However, the Switch 2’s different hardware architecture compared to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC has made the porting process quite challenging. Digital Legends stated during Gamescom that they undertook a significant amount of optimization work while adapting the game to Nintendo’s new console.

Modern Warfare 4 Aims for 60 FPS on Switch 2

Digital Legends Associate Production Director Beatriz Gonzalez says that every step must be carefully planned when porting a game to a new platform. The studio has 25 years of experience developing games for different hardware, and this experience played a significant role in the Switch 2 version of Modern Warfare 4. One of the team’s biggest goals was to preserve the core Call of Duty experience as much as possible.

The most striking detail on the performance side is the target set for the multiplayer mode. Digital Legends says it has managed to run at 60 FPS in dock mode. In handheld mode, the game currently reaches around 44 FPS. The development team is continuing optimization work to further improve performance in handheld mode before release.

The Switch 2 version will differ not only in performance but also in control options. Gyro controls will be supported via Joy-Con and Pro Controller. Furthermore, the ability to use the Joy-Con as a mouse when placed on a table has been included in the game. Gonzalez describes it as a real “wow” moment for the team when they first saw this feature working.

Digital Legends states that the game has been optimized separately for both dock and handheld usage scenarios. Nintendo-specific control options and technical settings have also been part of this process. Modern Warfare 4 will be released on October 23rd for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The final performance of the Switch 2 version will be determined by final optimizations before release.
