Despite Pressure, Sony is Not Giving up on its Digital PlayStation Plan
Sony’s decision to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games from 2028 onwards is drawing significant backlash from players and some publishers. Rumors that emerged during Gamescom 2026 suggested the company might postpone this transition by a year or two. However, according to Richard Browne, a seasoned figure in the game publishing industry, Sony is not working on such a change, and publishers are still preparing according to the current 2028 schedule.
Sony Plans to Stop Producing Physical PlayStation Games in 2028
Browne says that no discussions took place during Gamescom regarding a change in Sony’s strategy, and that the plan to completely switch to disc-less distribution for new PlayStation games from 2028 onwards remains in place. He also counters the claim that Microsoft will put pressure on Sony by re-emphasizing physical media with its next-generation Xbox, stating that he expects Xbox to follow a similar digital strategy.
According to Sony’s officially announced plan, physical disc production for new PS4 and PS5 games will end on January 1, 2028. However, existing games released in 2027 and earlier will not be affected by this decision, and new disc production orders for these titles will continue to be fulfilled. Sony also told investors that it does not expect the transition to negatively impact the company’s business results.
A significant portion of the gamers’ reaction stems from the issue of digital ownership. Petitions, social media campaigns, and a week-long PlayStation protest in August 2026 were held against the decision. The fact that digital purchases are considered as revocable usage licenses rather than traditional ownership also increases concerns about a completely digital future.
Nevertheless, the transition to entirely digital game distribution may not mean that the PlayStation 6 will not support physical discs at all. It is speculated that Sony may offer an optional disc drive on the next-generation console, similar to the PS5 Pro, thus allowing older PS4 and PS5 games to run. For now, what seems certain is that despite increasing pressure, Sony has not officially backed down from its goal of ending physical game production by 2028.
