Repairing the Zelda Switch 2 isn’t Very Easy
The Zelda Switch 2, with its special design created for the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda, has attracted the attention of collectors. However, compared to Nintendo’s updated Switch 2 model prepared to comply with new repair regulations in Europe, this special edition misses out on some important advantages. Chief among these is the easier user-replaceable battery.
Zelda Switch 2 Will Not Offer User-Replaceable Battery
Nintendo prepared a new hardware revision to make battery replacement easier on the standard Switch 2 to comply with the European Union’s repair rights regulations. However, according to the company’s statement, the Zelda Switch 2 will not have this change. This means that in the special edition, accessing the battery will require removing the back case and several screws.
The process is slightly easier with the new European model. The heat shield, which made accessing the battery difficult in the previous design, has been removed, and there’s no need to remove and reapply the adhesive that secures the battery to the case. However, we’re not talking about a completely “open the cover, change the battery” level system; a few disassembly steps are still necessary.
Interestingly, the Zelda Switch 2 has a slight advantage in battery life compared to the new European model. The updated model has a reduced capacity from 5,220 mAh to 5,172 mAh. Also, the new version weighs 548 grams, while the Zelda-themed model remains at 534 grams. So, while ease of repair has been gained, some small compromises have been made.
The Zelda Switch 2 is priced at $519.99 or €529.99 without games. The console will be available before the release of the Ocarina of Time remake on November 5th. While it has strong collector’s value, the increased hassle of battery replacement in the long run could be seen as a minor but significant drawback, especially for those planning to use the device for years.
