A recent ruling in the UK clarified how an in-game currency could be assessed in the context of real-world criminal charges. RuneScape Gold Has Legal Value

The court ruled that gold in Old School RuneScape could be considered “stealable property” in legal terms. In the case, a former employee was accused of gaining unauthorized access to hundreds of player accounts and acquiring large amounts of RuneScape gold. It was alleged that these assets were sold outside of the game and converted into financial gain.

According to the court that issued the ruling, the fact that an asset does not have a physical counterpart in the real world is not sufficient to exclude it from the scope of theft. The fact that in-game gold can be bought and sold both within and outside the game was considered a key element indicating that this asset could be the subject of a “dishonest transaction.” This approach emphasizes the connection between digital economies and the real world.

During the trial, Jagex, the game’s developer, argued that the total value of the seized RuneScape gold exceeded hundreds of thousands of dollars. The court ruling also noted that the progression system in Old School RuneScape requires time and effort, and that this effort cannot be considered entirely worthless.
