The company has implemented a new purchase limit for the external PS5 disc drive sold through the PlayStation Direct store. Sony Imposes Limit on PS5 Disc Drive Sales
Sony announced that only one PS5 disc drive accessory can now be purchased per person through PlayStation Direct. The company states on the product page that this measure was implemented due to high demand. The aim is to prevent bulk purchases and potential stock shortages in a short period of time.
Initially, this decision was noteworthy because it came shortly after Sony announced it would end new physical game production by January 2028. Therefore, some players speculated that opportunists might have started buying disc drives in bulk. However, a later update indicated that the purchase limit might have been in place even before this week’s announcement. So, there’s no official confirmation of a direct link between the two developments.
Sony also included an important reminder on its product page. According to the statement, physical PlayStation games released before 2028 will continue to be playable on compatible consoles. This means that even though new disc production will end, existing physical games won’t become completely obsolete. Users with disc drives will be able to continue using their old games.
The external PS5 disc drive is compatible with both PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro models, enabling the digital version to play physical games.
