Treyarch will Try Something New After Black Ops 7
Treyarch has had a very busy period on Call of Duty over the last two years, working back-to-back on Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7. As this process nears its end with the sixth season of Black Ops 7, studio executives have begun to give the first hints about their next project. Judging by the statements, the team is preparing to try something different instead of simply continuing in the same vein.
Treyarch Aims for an Unprecedented Experience
Design director Kevin Drew stated in the latest Black Ops 7 developer video that the studio is now ready to move into a new era. Drew noted that they have learned a lot and tried different ideas over the past two years, and that they want to do something in their next project that players have never experienced before.
Studio co-head Yale Miller also touched upon the changes made during Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7. He specifically mentioned that systems like Omnimovement and Endgame were important experiments for the team, and that they aimed to increase both the amount of content and the gameplay innovations throughout the two games. Partner studios like Raven Software also made significant contributions during this process.
The main question, however, is whether this new project will continue under the Black Ops brand. Treyarch has not yet announced the name or structure of the new game. Therefore, a completely new Call of Duty sub-series is possible, as is a more fundamental change that retains the Black Ops name. Data showing that Black Ops 7 had one of the weakest sales results in the series in recent years in the US may also have led the studio to re-evaluate the current formula.
Meanwhile, the near future of Call of Duty will depend on Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 4 project. Miller confirmed that Treyarch employees also participated in game testing for Modern Warfare 4. Treyarch, on its own side, is transitioning to its new project. There’s no concrete game announcement yet, but judging from the studio’s statements, their next project won’t be a safe bet, feeling like a direct sequel to Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7.
