Swedish Developers Quietly Rise to the Top of the Gaming Industry

While the balance between big-budget productions and independent games has rapidly shifted in recent years, Swedish developers are exhibiting a quiet but steady rise in the gaming industry. Newly released industry data reveals that Sweden, with a population of only around 10 million, will take the top spot in global gaming revenue by 2025.

Swedish Developers Lead Steam Revenue

According to the 2025 gaming industry report shared by Alinea Analytics, Sweden alone accounted for approximately 20 percent of the total revenue generated through Steam throughout the year. This is a striking achievement, surpassing established gaming markets such as the US and Japan. According to the report, 16 percent of this revenue came directly from Stockholm-based studios.

Beyond Stockholm, other Swedish cities have also stood out with strong productions. Uppsala-based R.E.P.O. alone accounted for approximately 3% of all games sold on Steam in 2025. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, also developed in the same city, garnered attention throughout the year with its PS5 version and expansion pack.

Cities in western Sweden, such as Gothenburg and Skövde, also made significant contributions to this rise. Battlefield 6 and Arc Raiders, both originating from Gothenburg, continue to generate long-term revenue thanks to their live service structures. Independent games developed in Skövde, in particular, have garnered significant interest among Steam users.

According to experts, Sweden’s success is due to experienced studios, a strong technical infrastructure, and a development culture focused on long-term projects. The consistent output of studios like Hazelight Studios, DICE-based teams, and Arrowhead indicates that Swedish developers will maintain their weight in the gaming industry in the coming years.
