The Creator of God of War Didn’t Like the Prime Series
Amazon’s first official image for its God of War (2018) adaptation was generally well-received by fans. The image, featuring Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus, generated widespread buzz on social media. However, series creator David Jaffe was not entirely pleased with this first teaser.
God of War Creator Finds Prime Series “Terrible”
In a video published on his YouTube channel, David Jaffe described the first image as “terrible” and “very bad in many ways.” He reacted not so much to Ryan Hurst’s casting as Kratos, but to the pose and presentation in the teaser image. According to Jaffe, a much more impactful scene should have been chosen for the first time introducing such an iconic character to a wider audience.
Jaffe’s biggest criticism is that the visual is weak from a marketing standpoint. Emphasizing that first impressions are critical in a project targeting a new audience, the creator considered the chosen image a failure to reflect the character’s strength and gravitas. The already controversial beard and appearance issue on social media was also brought back into the spotlight by these comments.
Despite this, Jaffe doesn’t believe the series will be a complete failure. He openly expressed his confidence in Ronald D. Moore, the showrunner, saying the experienced showrunner could take the project to a high level. Given Moore’s background in television, Jaffe sees a high probability of the series being successful.
Amazon’s God of War series doesn’t yet have a release date. However, this debate, sparked by the first visual, shows that the adaptation has already divided its fanbase. The ultimate success of the series will become clear when it airs.
