The Voice That Was Thought to be AI on Luminary, Look Who it Actually Belongs to
Luminary has become involved in one of the increasingly discussed AI debates in the gaming world. A player left a negative review on Steam, stating that they believed one of the voiceovers in the game was generated by AI. However, the response from developer Refractive Entertainment revealed that the player’s suspicion was incorrect, and the incident quickly became a topic of discussion on social media.
Luminary Developer Responds to AI Claim
The user, who only played the game for 0.4 hours, gave Luminary a “Not Recommended” rating, citing the voiceover as the reason. The player stated that the voice felt like it was generated by AI and therefore they did not want to continue playing. They also expressed hope that the voiceover was temporary.
Refractive Entertainment responded directly to the criticism. The developer explained that the character in question was voiced by his wife, and that this was her first voice acting experience. The team specifically emphasized that no AI was used, stating that they are a small, independent development group working with limited resources.
Following the incident, the discussion quickly shifted from the use of AI to the increasing difficulty players are having distinguishing between real content and AI-generated content. Some users argued that such false accusations might become more frequent in the future, while others stated that it’s unfair to accuse developers of using AI without evidence.
Interestingly, Luminary didn’t fare badly commercially. According to shared information, the game generated approximately $100,000 in sales revenue in its first week. So, while the controversy didn’t overshadow the game’s success, it provided an interesting example of how small studios may now face suspicions of AI use in everything from voice acting to visuals.
