The Witcher 4 Might Come Disc-less on PS5, but It’s Not CDPR’s Fault
The possibility that The Witcher 4 might not have a physical disc version on PS5 has recently sparked outrage among gamers. However, according to a statement from CD Projekt Red, this is not the developer’s choice. The company’s co-CEO, Michal Nowakowski, explicitly stated that if Sony’s plan to end physical disc production by 2028 goes through, it may not be possible to produce a PS5 disc for The Witcher 4.
The Decision on Physical Discs for The Witcher 4 Depends on Sony
According to Nowakowski, CD Projekt Red does not have direct control over the physical media policies of first-party platform owners. PlayStation game discs must be produced by Sony’s own manufacturing facilities. If the company actually stops disc production in January 2028, and The Witcher 4’s release date falls after that time, it may not be possible to produce a standard physical version for PS5.
This statement has led some players to criticize CD Projekt Red directly on social media. While some users say they will not buy the game if there is no physical version, others argue that the studio should put pressure on Sony. However, Nowakowski’s statement suggests that the decision-making power lies more with the platform owner than the developer.
Despite this, CD Projekt Red is not expected to completely abandon physical collector’s editions. The company previously prepared a fairly comprehensive collector’s edition for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Similarly, a special collector’s package for The Witcher 4 seems possible, but whether or not it will include a physical game disc will depend on Sony’s production policy.
The release date for The Witcher 4 has not yet been announced, but the game is expected to be released after 2028. Therefore, the issue of physical versions on the PlayStation side may become even more important in the coming period. For now, what is clear is that CD Projekt Red cannot determine disc production alone, and the decision is largely in Sony’s hands.
