The Witcher 4 will Disappoint Fans of the Physical Game

CD Projekt Red wanted to manage expectations for The Witcher 4 early on, ahead of Gamescom. The game won’t be shown at the event, but the studio made its clearest statement yet regarding the release window in a recent developer update. This information also brings with it a significant possibility regarding a physical version of the game.

The Witcher 4 Targets 2028

CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michal Nowakowski announced that The Witcher 4 is targeted for release in 2028. While acknowledging that this is a long wait, Nowakowski stated that the team needs time and that the final result will be worth the wait.

Of course, 2028 doesn’t mean a definitive release date at this stage. The Witcher 4 is still in development, and CD Projekt Red is known for multiple delays in the past, like with Cyberpunk 2077. Therefore, the plan could change, but the current target suggests the game will be available to players at the earliest two years from now.

The real point of concern is the physical release. If the information that PlayStation plans to stop producing game discs after January 2028 is true, then The Witcher 4’s release schedule seriously jeopardizes the physical PS5 version. If the game is released later in 2028, it may be quite difficult to find a physical copy.

CD Projekt Red hasn’t yet announced that The Witcher 4 will be distributed entirely digitally, so it’s too early to say anything definitive about a physical release. However, the current schedule doesn’t look very promising for physical game collectors. While The Witcher 3’s upcoming expansion pack will keep the series alive in the short term, it’s now clearer than ever that the wait for The Witcher 4 will be quite long.
