The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn Trailer Released
The X-Files: I Want to Believe is back in the spotlight almost 20 years after its theatrical release. Chris Carter’s original, harsher and more terrifying version is finally set to be released. The first trailer reveals that this new cut will not just be a few extra scenes, but will significantly alter the film’s tone.

The director’s cut, titled The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn, will be released on Hulu on August 14th. The subtitle, which translates to “Victor Frankenstein” in Russian, more clearly emphasizes the medical horror aspect of the film. The new version will be rated R and will be closer to the pure horror film feel that Chris Carter initially aimed for.
Carter explained that he had originally conceived the film as “a Frankenstein story set in real life,” but had to soften many scenes due to the studio’s PG-13 age rating requirement. According to the director, the resulting film didn’t fully reflect his vision. Returning to the editing table years later was like bringing the unfinished project back to life.
The story follows retired Fox Mulder and Dana Scully as they reunite to find a missing federal agent. Their only clue is Father Joe, a disgraced priest who claims to have seen disturbing psychic visions related to kidnapped women. As the investigation progresses, a dark conspiracy unfolds, filled with elements of human trafficking and medical horror.
The film stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, and also features Billy Connolly, Amanda Peet, Mitch Pileggi, and Callum Keith Rennie. Its 2008 theatrical release failed to meet expectations from either critics or the box office. Whether the new edit will completely save the film remains to be seen, but the first trailer suggests that The X-Files: I Want to Believe has finally become as terrifying as it needs to be.
