Legion Star Dan Stevens will Appear as the New RoboCop
Amazon is beginning to shape the cast for the new RoboCop series from MGM Studios. Dan Stevens will play the central character Alex Murphy, becoming the newest actor to take on the iconic role after Peter Weller and Joel Kinnaman. The eight-episode series will retain the core idea of the original 1987 film but will attempt to adapt themes such as technology, corporate power, and human identity to the modern world.
Dan Stevens to Play Alex Murphy in RoboCop Series
The new series’ story revolves around a large technology company convincing the city government to incorporate a powerful robot into the police force. The dark side of the story is that the robot contains the consciousness of police officer Alex Murphy, who died in the line of duty. So, the familiar RoboCop concept is preserved, but the narrative appears to lean more heavily on discussions of modern technology.
Peter Ocko will head the series. James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett will serve as executive producers. Developed by Amazon MGM Studios and Blumhouse Atomic Monster, the production is currently planned for eight episodes. Dan Stevens’ recent completion of his work on the John le Carré adaptation Legacy of Spies for Amazon MGM further strengthens his connection with the studio.
The RoboCop brand isn’t expected to rely solely on action in the new series. The producers aim to preserve the satirical elements of the 1987 film, which explored corporate greed, privatization, and the boundaries between technology and humanity. James Wan has previously stated that the questions the original film raised about technology and corporate power are even more relevant today.
RoboCop has returned numerous times before in feature films, animations, television productions, and games. While the 2014 remake starring Joel Kinnaman grossed $242.6 million, it failed to achieve the expected impact. No release date has yet been announced for the new series starring Dan Stevens, but with the casting of Alex Murphy confirmed, one of the most important pieces of the project has now fallen into place.
