Work has Begun on a Native Linux Version of GOG Galaxy
GOG Galaxy is preparing to address one of the biggest shortcomings long voiced by users outside of Windows. Announcing it will provide stronger support to the Linux community, the company has officially begun the process of porting its game store and library management application natively to this platform. However, users shouldn’t expect to download the application immediately.
GOG Galaxy is Being Developed as a Native Application for Linux
GOG co-CEO Krzysztof Papliński confirmed that Linux support is among the company’s priorities. To this end, an expert employee has joined the team to lead the GOG-on-Linux project. Instead of simply adapting the existing Windows application, the company aims to create a stable and complete version of GOG Galaxy that runs natively on Linux.
The new application is expected to retain the store, game library, update management, and other core features found in GOG Galaxy. However, ensuring all these systems work seamlessly on different Linux distributions requires a significant engineering process. Therefore, GOG has not yet shared a release schedule. While native Linux support is confirmed, it’s clear that the development process won’t be completed anytime soon.
Linux users aren’t completely without access to GOG games today. Third-party applications like Heroic Games Launcher and Lutris make it easier to install and run games from the store. The GOG Galaxy client for Windows can also be launched via Valve’s Proton compatibility layer. However, these methods sometimes require additional configuration, and not all features of the application may work flawlessly on every system.
A dedicated Linux application could provide better performance, more reliable updates, and account features. Furthermore, GOG’s DRM-free game approach naturally aligns with the free software community. This move by the company could also make things easier for Steam Deck users. While a Linux version of GOG Galaxy seems a long way off, the official launch of the project shows that the support the community has been waiting for for years is finally being taken seriously.
