Xbox May Completely Withdraw from the Steam Platform in the Future
While Xbox has recently been reshaping its multi-platform strategy, a rather striking claim has emerged regarding the PC side. It’s being suggested that Microsoft may abandon its policy of bringing its games to Steam and instead focus more on its own ecosystem. However, the company hasn’t yet made a definitive decision or shared an official withdrawal plan with the public.
XBOX May Be Considering Leaving Steam
Jez Corden, known for sharing information from within the industry, stated that Microsoft is evaluating various options that would significantly alter Xbox’s presence on PC. One of these options is allegedly creating a new structure that would allow the company to separate from Steam in the future. Corden specifically emphasized that the plans are not finalized and that Microsoft could choose one of the two options.
How the potential separation will be implemented remains unclear. Microsoft could simply stop bringing future games to Steam, or take a more drastic step and remove existing titles from the store as well. The latter would likely generate much greater backlash, as major Xbox titles like Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Forza Horizon 6, and Halo: Campaign Evolved reach a large PC audience through Steam.
This claim aligns with the company’s recent shift towards a more controlled multi-platform policy. While Gears of War: E-Day was announced as an Xbox exclusive at launch, the PlayStation 5 version of Forza Horizon 6 was postponed to a later date. It appears the new management wants to re-center its own console community and store. Moving away from Steam could steer players towards the Microsoft Store and Game Pass ecosystem.
However, since Steam is the largest store in the PC gaming market, a complete withdrawal would pose a significant risk for Microsoft. The company could increase its sales share in its own store, but it could also significantly reduce the visibility and reach of its games. Therefore, even if such a decision is made, it seems more logical to implement the transition slowly and only include new games. For now, the future of Xbox on Steam remains only a probable possibility until an official announcement is made.
