Baldur’s Gate 3 Descends into the Dungeons with The Sunless Citadel

Baldur’s Gate 3, after the official modding support, has essentially been given a second life with custom campaigns created by players. The new campaign, The Sunless Citadel, developed by Nexus Mods user Batilfly, has joined this ranks. Moving away from the main game’s expansive and open structure, the project focuses more on a classic dungeon adventure, offering entirely new areas, characters, quests, and enemies.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Becomes More Linear with The Sunless Citadel

The Sunless Citadel is inspired by the adventure of the same name in the third edition of Dungeons & Dragons. Mod developer Batilfly states that he created the campaign from scratch in about six months of solo work. The resulting content is not a small quest chain added to the main game; it’s a standalone mini-campaign that can be played on its own.

This time, the exploration aspect is more controlled. The Sunless Citadel has a more linear dungeon crawler structure compared to the main Baldur’s Gate 3 experience. Therefore, instead of constantly searching for new paths, more emphasis is placed on combat, quest progression, and dungeon encounters. It offers a different pace, especially for players who want more intense action.

The mod is not yet completely finished. Batilfly wants to add a working camp system, smoother quest tracking, and true fast travel support in the future. For now, fast travel is only possible with certain items. Thanks to the more linear nature of the campaign, these shortcomings are not expected to overwhelm the player.

The number of custom campaigns for Baldur’s Gate 3 is also increasing. Recently, other large projects like Act 2 Expansion were also released. A console release for The Sunless Citadel seems unlikely; custom campaigns are usually so large that they exceed console mod limits.
