A Reference to Leon has been Found in the Resident Evil Movie

Instead of directly adapting the events of Capcom’s games, Resident Evil tells a new story set in Raccoon City. However, the film features many details familiar from the games, such as typewriters, herbs, and first-aid sprays. Some small details that fans later noticed directly point to Leon S. Kennedy, suggesting that even though the character doesn’t appear in the film, he’s somewhere in this universe.

Leon S. Kennedy Traces Found in Resident Evil Film

The first reference is seen in the scene where Bryan, the medical courier central to the story, is escaping zombies through the streets of Raccoon City. A sign on one of the shops in the background reads “Leon S. Kennedy Guns and Ammo.” Because the scene is moving, it’s quite difficult to notice the sign on first viewing.

The funny thing is, during the time the story takes place, Leon is still a rookie cop. However, considering his later close relationship with firearms, the shop name becomes a nice joke. Director Zach Cregger reportedly said he doesn’t know exactly how this reference got into the film when asked about it.

The second detail regarding Leon emerges in the hospital scene. As Bryan navigates through the underground parking lot instead of the main entrance due to the zombies, one of the vehicles in the background is noticed to resemble Leon’s car. Some fans have interpreted this detail as a subtle reference to the character being in the hospital or somewhere else in Raccoon City at that time.

Of course, none of this confirms that Leon S. Kennedy will actually appear in the film. However, these small details embedded in the background of Resident Evil create pleasant surprises for viewers familiar with the games. It wouldn’t be surprising if other undiscovered references were found in different scenes of Raccoon City.
