PlayStation 6 Handheld Console Could Outperform PS5 Despite Lower Resolution

The PlayStation 6 handheld console may have become a little clearer thanks to new leaks codenamed Project Canis. The device, not yet officially announced by Sony, is claimed to operate with a very low internal resolution in portable mode, but could offer much higher performance than expected thanks to advanced upscaling technology. According to the shared information, the aim is to approach, or even surpass, the PS5 level by using limited power consumption more efficiently.

PlayStation 6 Handheld Console Can Upscale 540p to 1080p

According to the leak, the device will feature a custom-made 3nm AMD processor, six Zen 6 CPU cores, and 16 RDNA 5 Compute Units. It is suggested that 24GB of LPDDR5X memory with a 192-bit data bus will be used. Power consumption is stated to vary between 15W and 25W depending on usage.

PlayStation 6 Handheld Console Could Outperform PS5 Despite Lower Resolution

It’s claimed that in portable mode, the GPU will reach approximately 4.91 TFLOPS at 1.2 GHz, and in dock mode, it will reach 6.75 TFLOPS at 1.65 GHz. While these values are below the PS5 Pro in terms of raw computing power, the real difference is said to come from PSSR 3.0 technology.

According to the claims, games will only be rendered at the 540p internal resolution during handheld use, and then upscaled to the device’s 1080p screen using PSSR 3.0. This method is estimated to result in effective performance of 10-11 TFLOPS in portable mode and approximately 14 TFLOPS when docked. If these figures are accurate, the device could surpass the base PS5’s 10.28 TFLOPS in some scenarios.

Of course, all of this is currently just a leak. Sony has not announced any technical specifications or release date for the PlayStation 6 handheld console. While there are some rumors for late 2027, this timeline has not been confirmed. Given the historical reliability of the sources, it is necessary to approach the given figures with caution for now.
