Christopher Judge Explains Why He Gave Up the Role of Kratos
Christopher Judge, who voiced Kratos in the God of War games and handled his performance capture, has confirmed that he did indeed audition for the live-action adaptation being developed by Prime Video. Judge not only auditioned but also began physically preparing for the role. However, the 62-year-old actor decided later in the process that he didn’t want to return to the pace required for a long-running television production.
Christopher Judge Audited for Kratos
Judge says he took the project seriously because he thought the role could be a special legacy he could leave to his grandson. Therefore, he started training again and gained weight to physically get closer to Kratos. But when he found memorizing lines harder than ever before during the audition process, he realized this was an important sign for him.
The actor recalls working at a high pace for a long time between the ages of 33 and 44 during the Stargate era. Now, at 62, he clearly states that he doesn’t want to experience that same intensity again. The fact that the God of War series will be filmed back-to-back for two seasons and a total of 20 episodes makes this decision even more understandable.
The role of Kratos was initially given to Ryan Hurst, but after the actor tore his bicep on set, the project was changed. The role then went to Dave Bautista. Judge doesn’t have a negative view of Bautista’s selection; on the contrary, he says he wants every project connected to God of War to be successful.
Judge’s only reservation concerns Bautista’s physical transformation. He states that he hopes the actor, who recently lost a significant amount of weight, will regain muscle mass for the role of Kratos without causing health problems. The Prime Video series will be based on the modern God of War games, which focus on Norse mythology, and production is expected to resume in mid-October.
