75% of Players’ Spending Goes to Additional Content

According to data shared by analyst Daniel Ahmad, 75% of annual spending on game software comes from microtransactions and additional content. In the industry’s annual $195 billion software revenue, new games and subscription services account for only 25%. This clearly explains why game companies are placing so much emphasis on live services, cosmetic packs, and seasonal content.

Microtransactions Continue to Grow in Gamer Spending

Compared to data from two years ago, the trend appears unchanged. In 2024, microtransactions accounted for approximately 58% of revenue, particularly in PC games. The fact that this percentage is much higher in current total software spending shows that gamers are increasingly spending more money on in-game purchases rather than the base game over the years.

Major publishers are also generating significant revenue from this model. It’s reported that Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced alone earned $1 million from in-game purchases this year, and the total microtransaction revenue for the Assassin’s Creed brand has surpassed $100 million. These figures make it easy to understand why companies are expanding this system rather than abandoning it.

Interestingly, there’s a significant disconnect between developers and player behavior. According to shared research, 90% of developers believe microtransactions have no place, especially in AAA games. In contrast, 82% of players in the US make at least one in-game purchase annually.

As long as this situation doesn’t change, microtransaction systems are unlikely to disappear in the near future. Because as long as players continue to spend, companies have no strong reason to abandon this revenue model. The fact that 75% of player spending goes to additional content shows that the industry is now sustained not only by game sales but also by the long revenue cycle after the game.
