The Wait for SPINE Will End in the Summer of 2027
Nekki has announced that SPINE, a single-player, story-driven action game, will be released in Summer 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. A Switch 2 version is also planned, but this version will be released after the main launch. The game centers around Redline, a rebellious street artist, and Spine, a self-aware combat implant that works alongside him.
SPINE Transforms Gun Fu Fighting into Cinematic Action
SPINE’s biggest claim is its Freeflow Combat system, which seamlessly blends close combat with gunfights. Players can dodge bullets at close range, disarm enemies, counter-attack, and chain it all together in a single flow. Therefore, the game aims to look more like a playable action movie than a classic third-person shooter.
To enhance this feeling, a special combat camera has been created. The camera is positioned very close to Redline, attempting to make the conflicts more cinematic. This means that while the player retains complete control, the on-screen movements will unfold like a pre-choreographed film scene. This approach is particularly evident in finishing moves and sudden counter-attacks.
The story takes place in a dystopian megacity called Tensor City. The city was built by artificial intelligence to protect humanity from ecological collapse in the outside world, but over time it has evolved into a rigid social scoring system. This system determines what people can eat, where they can work, and how they can live. After a failed mafia heist, Redline loses his brother and sets out to find him, acquiring the Spine combat implant.
Along the way, players will encounter justice forces, mafia hitmen, VR-enhanced fanatics, and elite spinebearers called Children of Tensor. Boss battles are also planned to require different approaches each time. SPINE will be released in Summer 2027 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The Switch 2 version will be released at a later date.
